JSpamFilter can also scan embedded message URIs to determine if they correspond to known spam URIs listed on SURBL s.

JSpamFilter also supports Spam URI Realtime Blocklist (SURBL) look-ups.

Instead of identifying spam email on the basis of the domain or IP address of the sending mail server, SURBLs detect spam on the basis of based of message body Universal Resource Indicators (URIs).

URIs are used in the "links" that are present in web pages or email to take the browser to the associated site. URIs are misused by spammers and phishers to lure users to their sites. A URI can be labeled in a misleading fashion so that the user thinks they're going to one site, where in fact they're being taken to another.

That is, SURBLs keep lists of URIs, typically web sites, that are used in the bodies of spam email messages.

Unlike the DNSBLs mentioned in the previous section, the information on SURBLs is not used to identify and block senders of spam email, but rather to block the messsages that contain the spam host URIs listed in the SURBL.

See our DNSBL and SURBL FAQ for links to organizations that maintain these lists.
